You must read this book, it's terrific. 查《远东英汉大辞典》和《牛津现代高级英汉双解辞典》,terrific 只有两个含义①可怕的;令人恐怖的;②非常的;极大的。但是这两个含义都不符合句意。请解释。
terrific 与 terrible, horrible, dreadful, frightful 是同义词, 都表示“可怕的”, 但是后几个词都转化为表示不赞赏的用语(糟糕的)。唯独 terrific 有时会转化为表示赞赏的用语(=very good; excellent: 极妙的, 成功的, 了不起的)。这就是说, terrific 具有“同词反义”的现象。上面两部辞典没有收入 terrific 的这个含义。
