“▲问[62]《现代外语》1985年第2期(总第28期)在讨论《否定转移、否定范围和量词》一文里,作者把I suppose both children are not clever.译为:我想两个孩子都不聪明。请问:both为何成了全部否定?
答 I suppose both children are not clever. = Not both of them are clever. = Only one of them is clever. 第一句是习惯说法, 语法叫做“否定转移”。但是现代英语趋向简明, 干脆说 I suppose only one of them is clever. 但不能译为: 我想两个孩子都不聪明。(这句汉语如反译为英语, 应是 I suppose neither of the two children is clever.)”(p.49) 您也认为 I suppose both children are not clever. 绝对不能译为“我想两个孩子都不聪明”吗?
