used to 和 would 都可以用来表示过去的习惯性动作。不知它们之间有什么区别？
对于初学者来说,没有必要深究这两个词的区别,只要把 used to 看作是 would 即可。但是,对于英语教师或英语研究者来说,搞清它们之间的区别,还是很有必要的。现把 used to 与 would 的主要区别归纳如下:
A. would 只能用于表示过去习惯性动作,而不能用于表示过去的状态,而 used to 却可用于两种情况:

I used to be a waiter, but now a taxi-driver. (LEG) 我过去曾是个侍者，但现在我是个出租汽车司机。

I used to have a beard, but I've shaved it off. (LEG) 我留过胡子,但现在我已把它剃掉了。

People used to [× would] believe that the earth was flat. (Wood) 过去人们认为地球是平的。

I would get up early last year. (Evans) 我去年起床起得很早。

In the spring the birds would return to their old haunts, and the woods would be filled with their music... (CGEL) 在春天,鸟儿回到他们原来的栖息地,树林里充满了它们的歌声……
B. used to 不能跟表确定时间段的状语连用, 而 would 却可以:
× He used to live here for twenty years. (引自 Leech) 他曾在这儿住了二十年。
× We used to live in London for ten years. (引自 Close) 我们曾在伦敦住了十年。
C. used to 与 would 不同, 可用于无人称句和存在句:

There used to be a cinema here before the war. (Hornby) 战争以前这儿曾有一个电影院。

It used to be said that... 过去人们常说……
D. would 不能用在故事的开头,而必须使用一般过去时或 used to 来开头。
