I write down the first word and stop. 3 "That's not right. But is it OK to point out the mistake? Is that polite, in the first lesson?" Questions jump into my mind. 4 "Why aren't you writing, Wang Han?" I look up at Ms Chen. My eyes meet hers. My mouth feels dry. 6 But then I think about the meaning of the sentence. I put up my hand. "Ms Chen, there's a mistake," I say. "That sentence is from Confucius, not from Mencius." 8 "Well done, Wang Han. In fact, this is my first lesson for all of you. You are now in junior high school. Learning will be more difficult. You need to think more in your learning. Please always remember this." 9 That's really an important lesson! Choose the main idea of the passage.

教材## Understanding ideas 1 Look at the three pictures on the right and answer the questions. Use the words to help you. 1 Which picture reminds you of your father? 2 How can you describe your father and his love for you? silent heart quietly home care love Read the film review. What is the father's love like according to the writer? Silent Love 1 Along a mountain road, a handsome young man walks fast. An older man with a strict face follows him. This is from my favourite film, Postmen in the Mountains. It's a touching story about the love between father and son. 2 For years, the father served as the postman for this area. He was often absent from home and the son seldom saw him. But now the son is taking over his father's position. The father goes with him on his first day of work. Along the way, they start to see into each other's hearts. 3 For the first time, the son carries his father across a cold river. It brings back the father's memory of carrying the son on his back. Tears quietly run down his face. 4 This film shows a traditional Chinese father. He is happy about his son's growth. But he just hides his care in his heart. He doesn't give hugs or kisses to his son. His love may be silent. But like a mountain, it is always there.

(6) Before these metals in their natural state can be converted into useful forms to be of service to man, they must be separated from the other elements or substances with which they are combined. Chemists, who are well acquainted with the properties of metals, have been able to develop processes for separating metals from substances with which they are combined in nature... (7) These legends are useful because they can tell us something about migrations of people who lived long ago, but none could write down what they did. (New Concept English, Book 4, p. 5) (8) In Unit 3 we examined briefly the sequence of procedures which make up the so-called scientific method. we are now going to consider a few of the many ways in which a scientist may fall into error while following these procedures. (A Course in Basic Scientific English, p. 48) (9) These linguistic units enable people to refer to every obje

词典everybody/everyone...they 【问】(1)Every man and woman should vote for the candidate of their choice. (B's TOEFL) A B C D (2) Every one of the students had to do their own experiment, and then Professor A B C Brown judged the result. (TOEFL) 标准答案规定将 their 改为 his。 【答】作为各类考试(尤其是托福考试)的考生,应当牢记英语试题编写者们强调正式用法的意图,而坚决地按照他们的要求去做题:everybody/everyone/someone/somebody/anyone/anybody/no one/nobody 的指称代词只可使用 he(his),而不能使用 they(their)。 1. Everybody waits on themselves, and it's practically always supper, not dinner, and nobody dreams of changing their clothes. (E. M. Delafield,) 2. If someone dislikes it I shall never trust their literary judgment again. Everyone warned you, didn't they? (A Practical English Grammar, p. 97) 实际上, 现代英语学家们也承认了“everybody...they”这类用法的正确性。 4. Everyone thinks they have the answer. (CGEL) 5. Has anybody brought their camera? (CGEL) 6. No one could have blamed themselves for that. (CGEL) 7. \left\{ \begin{array}{l} Every one Each Each one \end{array} \right\} of the students should have \left\{ \begin{array}{l} their his \end{array} \right\} own books. (GCE) 8. When every man had assembled, the master paid them their wages. (A Reference Grammar for Students of English, p. 145) 大家集合齐了之后,雇主给他们发了工资。 9. Each of the women wore what they liked best. R. Close 认为, 使用 them 和 their 比使用 him 和 his 更为合理。 Everyone came, an
