以前的语法学家们把这种无主语亦无宾语的具有主动形式的不定式分析为具有被动意义的不定式 to be read。但是现代的语言学家们则采用了一种新的分析方法。他们认为这里暗含着未表达出来的主语和宾语：

1. The writing is too faint to read = ... for anyone to read it. 字迹模糊,无法阅读。

2. The food is good enough to eat. = ... for anyone to eat it. 这食品很好,可以吃。
