当名词中心词与充当其定语的动词不定式在语义上存在着状语关系时，一般是要使用适当的介词的。换言之，当充当定语的动词不定式是不及物动词时，只有加上适当的介词，才能与其中心词发生关系。从语义上看，中心词是介词的宾语。例如：
a pen to write with
a house to live in
a chair to sit on
a room to put the things in
上面句中的 to live 必须改为 to live in, 才能充当 a room 的定语, 并表明 a room 在语义上与 to live in 存在着状语关系, 或者说, a room 是介词 in 的宾语。但是, place, way 和 time 有其特殊用法 (参见 infinitive ):
the place to live(sit, eat) the time to go the way to do it.
