一般地说，直接引语中的虚拟语气过去时，在间接引语中要改为虚拟语气过去完成时。
- “If I had money, I would buy it,” she said.
She said that if she had had money, she would have bought it.
“如果我有钱，我就把它买了，”她说道。
她说，如果她有钱，她就把它买了。
- “If I were here, everything would be all right,” he said.
He said that if he had been there, everything would have been all right.
“如果我在这里的话，一切都会好的，”他说道。

但是，如果间接引语的内容，在说话时仍然有效，则直接引语中动词的时态也可以不向前移：
“If I were in New York, I would visit the current exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum,” he said. “如果我在纽约的话，我会去参观正在大都会博物馆举办的展览会，”他说道。
