下面是《大学英语语法讲座与测试》(华东理工大学出版社，p.302)的一段论述：“有些副词，既起关连作用，又充当先行词，集关系副词与先行词于一身，通常称作缩合连接副词，多引导名词性从句，也可引导状语从句。如 where = the place where, when = the time when, why = the reason why, wherever = any place where, whenever = any time when” 我觉得上面的 whenever 似乎不像是缩合连接副词。

上例中的 whenever 是典型的从属连词, 不能用作缩合连接副词(在本书中也叫做省略中心词的关系副词), 这是因为 whenever 不能用作关系副词的缘故。
