问题1:cattle的单复数形式一样吗？它们的谓语动词可以用单数吗？
问题2:cattle的用法与deer, fish, sheep, Japanese, Chinese的用法相同吗?
cattle, 如同 people, police 一样, 是个无标记复数名词, 即没有复数标记但用作复数的名词(见 people, police), 因此, 其谓语动词总是要用复数。WDAE 的注释是 cattle[plural; used with a plural verb]。所以, 绝不可以说 cattle 是“单复数同形的名词”, “动词可用单、复数形式”。请看下面的实例:
- Cattle are also kept, and about 15 million tons of wheat are grown every year.

cattle 与 deer 和 sheep 的用法是完全不同的。后者是单复数同形的名词，即其复数永远采用零复数形式的名词(参见 deer, sheep):

cattle 与 fish 的用法也不相同。后者除可用作单数外，还具有两种复数形式: fish 和 fishes（参见 fish）。而 cattle 没有单数形式，也没有以 -s 结尾的复数形式，而只有 cattle 这一复数形式。
cattle 与 Japanese 和 Chinese 的用法更不相同。后者既可用作形容词，又可用作名词。在用作名词时，既可用作单数(a Japanese, a Chinese)，又可用作复数(five Japanese, five Chinese)。 cattle
大作《英语常见问题解答大词典》(世界图书出版公司,2006,p.1076) people 条中说: “people, police 和 cattle 都可与数词连用,表示单体,twenty people/police/cattle(20 个人/20 个警察/20 头牛)”。我认为 twenty cattle 的说法,应改为 twenty head of cattle (= twenty cows)(见《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》第六版,商务印书馆,p.251)。
cattle 与 people 和 police 一样,也可以直接与数词连用。因此,除了 twenty head of cattle 的说法之外,twenty cattle 的说法也是正确的。请看下面的例证:
