smell ²

当 smell 用作连系动词时或者用作及物动词,作“闻到”“嗅到”解时,不能用于进行时:1. This fish smells bad. 这条鱼有坏味了。

2. I smell gas. 我闻到了煤气味。

但是, 当 smell 表示有意识地去嗅时, 就可以用进行时(参见 taste $^{2}$ , feel $^{4}$ ):

1. Why are you smelling the milk? Does it smell sour? 你为什么要闻牛奶？它有酸味了吗？

2. “What are you doing?” “I’m smelling the roses.” “你在干什么？”“我在闻玫瑰花。”

3. “What are you doing?” “I'm smelling my shirt to see if I can wear it for another day.” “你在干什么呢?”“我在闻我的衬衫，看看我能否再穿一天。”
