at heart/in the heart

in 可以与 heart 搭配,但是 heart 之前一般带定冠词或物主代词: in the [his] heart。in the heart 与 at heart 的意义是不同的。at heart 是指:“内心里”“实际上”“实质上”(见 heart $^{1}$ )。而 in the heart“在心里”“在……中心”。请看下面的实例:

1. At heart he is a simple, generous fellow. (Whitford) 他实际上是一个纯朴、慷慨的人。

2. He could not bring himself to say what was in his heart. (Maugham) 他不能使自己说出心里的话。

3. The insurance company occupies a 20-story building in the heart of the city. (URW) 保险公司在市中心占有一栋20层的大楼。
