与该书配套的[《教师教学用书》第三册(上)(p.94)]对上面的 this something 作了如下的注释：
“不定代词 something, anything, nothing 前通常不加定语。此句中的 this something 是作者的特殊用法，指上文中 to do something well 中的 something。居里夫人思想中的这个 something 是指人们的‘生活目标’。教师应向学生交代，something, anything, nothing 等词的定语通常是加在这些词的后面，如 something new, nothing important, anything else 等。”

this something 不是作者的特殊用法,而是正常用法,因为 something 可以用作名词,所以可以带限定词(定冠词或不定冠词、指示代词)和前置修饰语。例如:
And there, glowing with a faint blue light in the glass test-tubes on the tables, was the mysterious something which they had worked so hard to find: Radium. 就在那儿，在桌上的玻璃试管里，正闪烁着微弱的蓝光，这就是他们付出了极其艰辛的劳动所要寻找的那种神秘的东西：镭。
