汉语的“怀疑”，意为“不很相信”。例如，“他这话叫人怀疑”。译文中的“没有人怀疑”，可能被理解为“谁都相信”，但这跟上下文的内容是相矛盾的。当然，汉语的“怀疑”还有另一层意思：“猜想”，例如，“我怀疑他是个特务”。但是读者读了这句译文时，大概很少有人把“怀疑”理解为后一层含义。况且“怀疑”后面的逗号，更会使人排除这种理解。如果取 suspect 的另一含义，把它译作“想到”（think, imagine, guess, surmise）就可以避免这种歧义现象。
[试译]谁也没有想到农场里竟然还有一个从未露过面的人。但事实确是如此。
这里应当补充指出, suspect 确实具有“怀疑”“不相信”(If you suspect something, you doubt that it can be trusted or that it is reliable.) 和“认为”“想到”(If you suspect something, you think that it is likely or is probably true.) 这两种不同的含义。
