no/not...any

含 not(...)any 的否定句与含 no 的否定句在基本语义上是相同的。但是, no 较 not (...)any 更为正式, 并且表示更为强烈的否定。请对比下列实例:

1. I don't see any clouds. $\$approx I see no clouds. (CGEL) 我看不见一丝云彩。

2. Wilson has not any car. $\$approx Wilson has no car. (Greene) 威尔逊没有汽车。

3. I haven't seen any one. $\$approx I've seen no one. (LEG) 我连个人影都没看到。 $\$approx 我没有看到一个人。

应当注意,含 no 的否定句可以把 no 放在句首:

Dogs are not permitted here. $\$approx No dogs are permitted here. (CGEL) 这里禁止狗入内。

还应注意,含 not...any 的否定句与含 no 的否定句,有时候含义是不同的。

1. She isn't a fool. $\$neq She is no fool. 她不是傻瓜。 $\$neq 她很聪明。

2. It is not a joke. $\$neq It is no joke. 这不是笑话。 $\$neq 这可是正经事。

3. I am not a teacher. $\$neq I am no teacher. 我不是教师。 $\$neq 我不是教书的材料。

最后还应指出, no 有时候并不是对句子的否定, 而是对名词本身的否定(局部否定)。因此, 这样的句子不能用 not...any 来代替 no:

1. No news is good news. (no 只否定 news) 没有消息便是好消息。

2. No food at all is better than unwholesome food. (Leech) 不吃东西比吃不卫生的食品要好。
