not generally/not normally/not usually 见 not usually
generic reference (类指)
(a)A tiger is dangerous.
(b) The tiger is dangerous.
(c) Tigers are dangerous.
(d) The tigers are dangerous.
(A tiger, The tiger, Tigers)都可以用来表示类指,就足够了。 至于the English
generic reference
和 the poor 表示类别的情况, 见 English/the English, generic reference 。
generic reference (类指)
the tigers 和 the wolves 一般不能用来表示类指,为什么 the English 却可以用来表示类指呢?
- The French, for instance, might find it hard to laugh at a Russian joke. (NCE, Book 3, L.
-
The state must care for the poor.
-
The young are better fed today in many countries than ever before. (McArthur)
之所以有这种区别,是因为 the English(French, Irish)虽可在整体上看作是一个名词短语,但其中的 English(French, Irish)却是个形容词。
The Englishmen are fond of singing.
An Englishman is fond of singing.
